'Mirrabooka Southern Cross'

'Mirrabooka Southern Cross'

Firstly, a huge thank you to Paul Davies - DJ extraordinaire on the Big Little Breakfast Show at Radio Adelaide 101.5 - for first airing this track (along with a fantastic introduction of the Dreamtime story) across Australian airwaves on November 28, 2025.

This song has been created as a peaceful message to all Australians — like myself — who live under the Australian flag of Mirrabooka, the Southern Cross. But, it is much more than the symbol of our new nation; it has always been the celestial centrepiece of the First Nation.

We, the ‘newcomers’, were all very far away — non-existent — 40 000 years ago when stories of constellations were being created and told around tribal fires; stories from the Dreamtime handed down through thousands of generations.  However, thanks to the four girls of the ancient night sky our English forefathers were able to hoist the Union Jack... on lands that had never been ours. So important was the constellation in guiding early explorers that we chose to place it on our nation's flag.

Then, when rioters on Victorian goldfields decided to revolt against colonial rule, they (unknowingly) hoisted the 'Glamour and Gloss' of four Aboriginal sisters; for these girls, also, had sworn allegiance: they had promised their father, Mululu, the great leader of the Kanda people that they would join him in the sky after his death.

Throughout Australia's modern-day history, we have unfortunately never realised that we have been paying respect to a symbol based on Love of the Land, and Love of Family and of each other.

Mirrabooka: use it as a message of Peace and Unity. Learn and remember this one word that EVERY Australian should know. Fly the flag proudly and use the Aboriginal name of our Southern Cross as a way of paying respect to those of the First Nation.

Mirrabooka rising,
see... our precious girls.
Upon those sandy stars
four bright dancing pearls.
Guiding People
over desert... over Mallee,
four sisters in a sparkling sky
in a shining crystal valley.

[CHORUS]
Here they come… on evenin' sky
over wide brown lands they cross.
And from a fire, sparks go dancing
deep into the Southern Cross.

---------

From north went sailing
all those English hands,
and over... stormy oceans
they found our Southern Lands.
Guiding sailors
by wave and rocky reef
four sisters in a sparkling sky
saving all from sunken grief.

[CHORUS]
Here they come… on evenin' sky
over wide brown lands they cross.
And from our fire, sparks go dancing
deep into the Southern Cross.

From fire, sparks go dancing
Mirrabooka… Southern Cross
You, the girls of Dreamtime
your glamour and your gloss!
--------

And you… rebels of the goldfield
where diggers blood did spill
you swore... allegiance to the stars
hoisted high upon a hill.
Eureka! went the cry
now we sing the song
as day goes still...

Here they come… on evenin' sky
over wide brown lands they cross.
And from our fire, sparks go dancing
deep into the Southern Cross.

From fire, sparks go dancing,
Mirrabooka… Southern Cross
You, the girls of Dreamtime
your glamour... and your gloss!

Here they come… on evenin' sky
over wide brown lands they cross.
And from our fire, sparks go dancing
Mirrabooka… Southern Cross
